GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, a PolyOne business, is a global leader in high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). Today, GLS announced it has developed a new family of TPEs acceptable for many food contact applications. Dynalloy™ OBC 8100 TPE series products have been formulated using materials qualifying both as food contact substances (FCS) under the U.S. Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and as compliant under the compositional requirements of EU Directive 2002/72/EC.1

Offered in a variety of hardness options, the Dynalloy OBC 8100 TPEs can be overmolded onto polypropylene and are easy to color and process via injection molding.

Joe Kutka, technology launch manager, GLS, said, “TPEs are a natural choice for food preparation accessories and equipment because they can enhance kitchen safety and comfort through their non-slip gripping properties and soft feel. With our new food-contact Dynalloy grades, manufacturers can now leverage the design and aesthetic advantages of TPEs, particularly with overmolding technology, to create practical and stylish consumer products.”

Dynalloy OBC 8100 grades leverage the unique rubber properties of Dow Infuse™ Olefin Block Copolymers. They are offered in Shore A hardnesses of 50, 65 and 75, and can be custom-formulated to achieve other Shore A values. Applications can include: handle grips for items such as measuring cups; infant feeding items; and low-pressure seals. By providing a secure grip, a soft-touch feel and attractive aesthetics, these materials can add significant value to these types of products.

All three injection molding grades – 8100-N50, 8100-N65, and 8100-N75 – are offered in natural, and can be custom-colored using color concentrates with PP, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), or low density polyethylene (LDPE) carriers. In addition, the new materials provide easy processing with enhanced flow properties for long flow lengths and multi-cavity tools.
