Walki®Pack Bio X

Walki®Pack Bio X is a polymer coated board with a biodegradable polymer coated surface just launched by Walki Group.

Walki®Pack Bio X is
· fully biodegradable according to ASTM D6954-4 (Standard guide for plastics that degrade in the environment by a combination of oxidation and biodegradation)
· non toxic
· totally food safe (complies with Framework Regulation 1935/2004/EC)
· recyclable
· no heavy metal content

Walki®Pack Bio X will biodegrade in landfill or where conditions are conducive to biodegradation by the presence of Oxygen and microbes or fungi. The product is designed to degrade in a manner whereby the CO2 emitted is at the rate at which nature can re absorb the carbon produced using photosynthesis. This avoids the risk of rapid release of methane which is 25 times more damaging as a "Greenhouse Gas".

Walki-Pack Bio X will not biodegrade during normal usage, i.e. ambient or frozen storage, damp conditions or areas of high humidity. Unusual for a biodegradable product, it performs in a comparable way to standard polymer; its barrier properties, heat sealing, print performance and glue ability, all being equivalent. This means customers and end user processes will not be adversely affected.

Walki®Pack Bio X is in the classification "widely recyclable" (as designated by the green claims code ISO 14021), re-useable or recoverable. When incinerated there will be no harmful emissions or toxins. Burning releases carbon dioxide and water vapour, and gives the equivalent calorific energy value as the same weight of fossil fuel.

All statements made relate specifically to the polymer layer. Biodegradation of the paper or board in the construction can be certified separately by the supplying mill. Biodegradation of the total substrate will be dependant on how the material is modified by converter processes which is outside our control. The affect of the addition of ink, varnishes and adhesives therefore needs to be assessed by the converter and or end-user.
